How to Avoid Duplicating Albums in iTunes

If you have an iTunes account, chances are you will be continuously adding to your music library to help make it grow. However, there’s also the chance that you may end up accidentally adding songs or albums that you already had previously. This is something that can not only waste memory space on your PC, iPod and/or iPad that you may have synced to the iTunes library, but it can also cause your library to become extremely cluttered.

There is one main way to remedy this situation by using iTunes itself, which involves checking your “Date Added” tab in your iTunes library, which is useful since duplicated items are usually added on different dates. By checking the “Date Added” tab, you will be able to easily identify, separate, and/or delete any album and song duplicates.

You can also organize your iTunes files in order to avoid any duplicate albums or songs being added to them. All you will need to do is access your “Preferences” tab before clicking on the “Advanced” tab. To have your iTunes folders always organized, click on “Keep iTunes Media Folder Organized,” which will sort all of your songs, albums, etc. and let you know about any duplicate songs and/or albums that are found.

Another possibility is to manually delete any duplicate iTunes albums that you may come across in your library. There are actually two different ways to do this once you click the “View” menu, then “As List” at the top of the iTunes library screen, which will bring up a complete list of songs and albums that you have in your library.

The first thing is to hold down the “Shift” key on your keyboard and left-click on all of the duplicate items you may come across that you want to delete. Once you finish, right-click on any of the highlighted items and select the “Delete” option, as well as clicking “Yes” when asked to confirm.

Alternatively, if you already know which duplicate songs or albums need to be deleted from your iTunes library, simply look through the list until you find them. Right-click on each one individually and delete them.

While these remedies are extremely useful, there is another one that you may not have heard very much about. It’s a piece of software called Clone Files Checker. It is free to download and works in the following steps:

  • Scan your PC
  • View report
  • Delete iTunes album duplicates
  • Rescue gigabytes

So not only does Clone Files Checker delete any duplicates that the software finds, it also helps to free up space on your computer.

In terms of you iTunes library, all you need to do in order to use Clone Files Checker to delete any duplicates is add the path for iTunes into Clone Files Checker’s scanning windows. In just 1 step this tool would identify and enlist all the dupes in your library. You would have the option to analyze each single song and the album hosting that song. An audio preview feature is also available with the help of which you can listen to the song you wish to review/listen prior to removal.

Clone Files Checker can then be used to remove the duplicate items from your library; however, it will not permanently delete them from your hard drive without your prior permission, which you can give from the software’s “Review and Fix” feature. An “Auto Fix” feature is also available, which will permanently delete iTunes duplicate files automatically.
