Carbonite Backup for Windows 11 Tutorial and Review of Features

If you’re looking for a basic backup service with unlimited online storage, Carbonite Backup is a good option. It is a secure cloud-based file backup service that provides unlimited cloud backup storage for a single device and File Explorer integration. With a few steps, you can encrypt files stored on your hard disk, external hard disk, and network drive with the AES-128 algorithm, and back them up onto the cloud.

Here are some key features of Carbonite Backup:

  • No File Size Limits: Carbonite not only offers unlimited online storage but also limitless file sizes. You can backup large files without any limits. If you’re a video editor and looking to back up your large videos, you might find it useful.
  • Schedule Backups: Manually backing up files can be troublesome. With Carbonite, you can schedule backups and forget them. The schedules are performed at a predefined time interval (such as once a day, once a week, or a month), or at a predefined event (such as whenever a file is changed). You can also pause or cancel scheduled backups if you want.
  • Bare Metal Backup: Business plans support the Bare Metal Backup option where everything on the user’s computer, including the operating system, documents, and other files, are backed up onto Carbonite servers. Keep in mind that this feature is limited to only the most expensive plan.
  • Cross-platform: Until recently, Carbonite was available only for Windows and Mac users. However, they have launched Android and iOS apps recently. However, these smartphone apps can only be used for accessing your backups rather than backing up your data.
  • File & Folder Recovery: Regardless of whether you’re a home or business user, you can restore individual files and folders, or everything stored in your backup.
  • Versioning: Carbonite stores up to 12 versions of your modified files so that you can restore your data from accidental modifications.
  • Advanced Encryption Settings: While backing up your files onto the cloud server, you will have two options. First, store encrypted backups on dedicated data centres along with the Private Keys of your backups. However, it comes with the risk of data breach. In the event hackers gain access to your private data, they can decrypt it with the Private Keys stored on these servers. Second, you will generate and store the Private Keys locally, while the backups are stored in dedicated data centres. It is more secure, although there’s a major catch. Your backup contents can become inaccessible if you lose your Private Keys or if they are stolen or corrupted due to hardware faults.
  • Courier Recovery: Do you want to restore a lot of files, but the Internet connection is too slow? If so, Carbonite offers a Courier Recovery Service that ships backups on an external drive to your doorstep. As you might have already guessed, this service is not free. You will need to pay additional charges, including shipping. Safe Prime customers are eligible for an instant discount, nonetheless.
  • 2-FA Security: Your account is protected with a 2-factor Authentication, which helps neutralize any risks with compromised login credentials. If your login credentials are hacked or stolen, it will act as an additional layer of security.
  • Safe Server: Business users can back up an unlimited number of computers, Network Attached Storage (NAS) drives, and external hard disks.
  • Optimize Bandwidth Utilization: You can optimize the Bandwidth Utilization settings to determine the amount of data to be transferred or received depending on the speed of your Internet connection.

Bonus Tip: Easy Way to Reduce Backup Size & Time

Carbonite’s major selling point is unlimited backup storage. However, if you’re looking to backup GBs of data, it can take a lot of time and bandwidth. It’s possible to significantly decrease the time and bandwidth usage with a simple technique: Delete duplicates.

Duplicate files are identical copies of your files that can eat up your storage and increase the size of your backup for no good reason. Deleting duplicates will not only make your backups smaller, but also bring down the processing time and network bandwidth. Simply scan your files and folders using Duplicate File Finder Windows 11 before starting the backup. Such small backups will boost your productivity and make it easier to back up and restore your files as needed.
