How To Create A Second Library for iTunes?

Thinking of creating a second iTunes library? Making unique libraries for each type of music will help you organize it. Thankfully, iTunes supports adding multiple libraries. Regardless of the operating system you use (Windows or Mac), you can create a second library for iTunes and split your music accordingly.

What is an iTunes Library?

An iTunes Library is a database of your music files. It may contain music and videos. Just like you can create a local music library, Apple provides you access to its iCloud Music Library when you subscribe for its monthly subscription service.

Creating a Second Music Library

For Windows:

  1. Exit iTunes completely. Right-click its system tray icon and select Exit to ensure it is not running in the background.
  2. Press and keep holding the Shift key of your keyboard while you double-click to open iTunes.
  3. Click on Create Library.
  4. Specify a name for your new library. Make sure you do not use the same name as your previous library. For example: Relaxing sleep music
  5. Click on Edit, select Preferences.
  6. Set the parental configurations, content settings and other parameters for your new library.

For Mac OS:

  1. Open the iTunes app.
  2. Click on the iTunes menu, select Quit to completely exit it.
  3. Press the Option key of your keyboard and keep holding it while you open the iTunes app again.
  4. In the Choose iTunes Library window, click on Create Library.
  5. Type a name for your new library.
  6. Now, click on iTunes, select Preferences.
  7. Check the iCloud Music Library option.
  8. Click on the Advanced tab and disable a feature called Copy files to iTunes media folder when adding to the library.
  9. Open the Music folder from the Finder.
  10. Go to the following directory: …\iTunes\iTunes Music
  11. Select the files you want to add to your second library. Drag and drop them over to the iTunes window to add to the library.
  12. You can repeat over the Step # 11 for files in different folders.

Find Identical Music Files in your iTunes Library (Mac & Windows)

iTunes has a duplicate music identifier feature. It’ll filter out unique files and only display the duplicate music in your library.

  1. Open iTunes.
  2. Press the Alt key to show the menu bar.
  3. Click on the View menu, select Show duplicate items.
  4. iTunes will show up all the identical music files in your library.

Find Identical Music Files Using A Specialized Software (Windows)

Even though iTunes already has a duplicate finder feature, 

  1. Download Clone Files Checker for Windows.
  2. Click on the System Scan tab.
  3. Click on the iTunes Search tab.
  4. CFC will display a warning pop-up that the duplicates are identified based on music tags and misplaced music tags could result in false positives. Read it carefully and click on OK.
  5. Clone Files Checker will automatically identify and add your iTunes music library to the Select Drive/ Folder list.
  6. Select your music tags to compare the files. By default, CFC selects Title, Album and File Content. Selecting File Contents will be helpful if the music tags are missing in your files.
  7. Click on Start Search.
  8. Click on the Select Duplicates button and choose a criteria to mark/ unmark your files.
  9. Click on Select Action and choose whether to delete your duplicate files or move them to a separate folder. To free-up your precious space, delete the duplicate files permanently. To review your files at a later time, move them to another folder.

Windows 8.1/ 8:

C:\Users\UserName\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Media

Windows 7:

C:\Users\User\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Media

Vista:

C:\Users\User\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media

How to Find Path to your iTunes Library?

  1. Open the iTunes Preferences.
  2. Click on the Advanced tab.
  3. You’ll find your media library location under the iTunes Media Folder Location box.
