Why Delete Lightroom Duplicate Photos?

A duplicate file is an exact or visually-similar copy of another file. If you’re regularly importing photos from your digital camera, you might gather a lot of duplicate photos. Here are some reasons why you should regularly dedupe your Lightroom catalog:

  • Small & optimized catalog file: Lightroom builds a catalog of all photos imported into the application. Over time, this catalog grows exponentially. Larger the catalog, slower the application speed. You may incur frequent application freezes or crashes. Deleting duplicate photos will not only help you free-up the storage and organize Lightroom files efficiently, but also get rid of constant freezes & crashes. Lightroom will run smoother. Un-doing photo changes will become faster.
  • Fast, easy & bandwidth-friendly photo exports: Exporting photos becomes simple, fast and bandwidth-friendly. Duplicate files can make exporting photos difficult and time-consuming. By deleting duplicates, there will be lesser photos to export.
  • Cost-effective: Deleting duplicate photos will help you save a good chunk of money. Lightroom is a subscription-based product. It offers three plans, starting from $9.99 up to $19.99 charged every month. The beginner-level plan offers a limited cloud storage to store your photos and other files. It offers access to Adobe Photoshop Lightroom only. Another plan that costs $9.99/ month offers 20 GB of online storage, Adobe Portfolio and access to Adobe Lightroom Classic, Adobe Photoshop on desktop, iPad. The higher plan, 1 TB plan, offers 1 TB of cloud storage and all of the previous plans’ features. By deleting dupes on a regular basis, you can stay on the minimal plan and save more files on the cloud without worrying about storage limits.
  • Automated Advanced File Selection Patterns: Using the right tool such as PictureEcho, you can automatically batch select duplicate files in your collection by their nature. For example: Mark newest/ oldest in each group, Mark high/ low resolution in each group, Mark most/ least modified in each group, Mark by location etc.

Finding Lightroom Duplicate Photos

Method 1: Using PictureEcho (Fast, Secure & Easy)

Finding duplicate photos in Lightroom is easy. A third-party software PictureEcho offers premium features to fast and accurately delete dupes and reclaim your lost storage. Most importantly, PictureEcho can not just find 100% identical photos, but also photos that are visually-identical in nature. It also offers many add-on features to organize photos on your disk, delete empty folders, find & delete duplicates from OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox, Amazon S3, and Box Cloud.

Steps:

  1. Download PictureEcho and install it on your computer.
  2. Click on the Adobe Lightroom tab.
  3. PictureEcho will automatically recognize and add your Lightroom Catalog file.
  4. Select one of the following scan types:
    • Exact match: Use this option to find photos that are 100% identical in nature. This scan mode finds the most accurate dupes.
    • Similar match: Use this option to find visually-similar photos. Using this option, you can find the maximum number of duplicates.
  5. Start the scan.
  6. Once the scan is finished, use the Select Duplicates button to batch select dupes you want to remove.
  7. Click on Select Action and choose whether you want to permanently delete the duplicate photos, or move them to a separate folder of your choice.

Method 2: Using Lightroom Duplicate Finder Plug-In (Paid)

There are some Lightroom plugins that can find your Lightroom duplicate photos using the EXIF information. Unfortunately, this method isn’t perfect. If the EXIF data is not filled properly, this method may result in false positives. If the EXIF data is empty, these plug-ins may not find any duplicates at all. These plugins compare your files by metadata information such as author, camera lens, image resolution, location coordinates, flash, compression, exposure time. As you can see, the actual images themselves are not compared.

1.Download the Lightroom Duplicate Finder and extract the zip file to a separate folder on your Desktop.

2. Open Adobe Lightroom.

3. Click on File > Plug-in Manager > Add.

4. Choose your extracted plug-in file and then proceed ahead.

5. Now click on the Library menu, select Plug-in Extras > Find Duplicates.

6. In the Find Duplicates dialog, choose what to scan. For example: Select the All option to scan all the photos in your Lightroom catalog for dupes. Select Within selected to only scan the user selected photos.

7. Now determine which EXIF data you want to compare. You can check one or more of the following checkboxes. It is highly recommended that you select the maximum checkboxes to avoid false positives.

  • Lens.
  • ISO Rating.
  • Camera Serial Number.
  • Shutter Speed.
  • Aperture.
  • Exposure Bias.
  • Base Filename.
  • Ignore Virtual Copies.

8. If you want to ignore specific keywords, enter them in the Ignore Keywords text box underneath the above checkboxes.

9. If you want to exclude specific photo formats, select them in the Ignore Image Type drop-down box.

10. If you want to scan only specific photo formats and exclude everything else, select your desired format in the Only Image Type drop-down box. For example: RAW.

11. Click on OK.

Method 3: Using Teekesselchen Lightroom Plugin (Free)

This plug-in is free-of-cost. It offers less features compared to the Lightroom Duplicate Finder plug-in. Many scan filtering features are unavailable.

Please note that much like the Lightroom Duplicate Finder plug-in, this plug-in also considers the EXIF data as the ONLY parameter to find your duplicate photos. This means that no actual photos are compared. Only EXIF data is taken into consideration, hence there are chances of a lot of false positives.

Here’s how you can use this plug-in:

  1. Download the plugin Teekesselchen Lightroom Plugin and extract it to a folder on your Desktop.
  2. Open Adobe Lightroom.
  3. Click on File > Plug-in Manager.
  4. Click on Add.
  5. Select the extracted plug-in file and confirm.
  6. After successful installation, click on Library > Plug-in Extras > Find Duplicates.
  7. In the new dialog, click on Find Duplicates.
  8. The plugin will automatically identify the duplicate photos. Click on OK.
  9. You’ll be back to your Lightroom collection where you can view your photos and review them. A grid will automatically separate your original and duplicate photos. The plugin will automatically mark the duplicate photos for deletion.
  10. Uncheck any photos that you want to preserve. Leave all others checked to delete automatically.
  11. Now click on the Photo menu, select Delete Rejected Photos.
  12. Your selected duplicate photos will be deleted automatically.
