Change File Type in Windows 11

There was a time when changing the file type was hard. It has become much easier, and users now have several different ways of storing their files on Windows 11. So, if you are planning to change some file types, and if you are not running or are compatible with the existing programs installed, this article shares some tips that will allow you to change the file type in seconds.

Changing File Type via Renaming Using Windows File Explorer

To change file types via Windows File Explorer using the renaming feature, the first thing you will need to do is get access to the file extensions. Once the file extensions are visible, you can change the file types by renaming the existing type with the new one.

You can change an ‘MP4’ file to ‘MKV’ and still play the file on the same media player. But do not expect to change an ‘MP4’ file to ‘JPG.’ It will not work. You have to be sure that changing the file type will make the file work in the respected program.

Steps for Changing the File Type

The first step is to locate the file you wish to rename/change. Right-click on it, and select ‘Rename.’ Or, you can also choose the ‘Show more options’ at the bottom. From the list, select ‘Rename’ and rename the file extension with the new one.

When Windows asks for approval, click ‘Yes’ to confirm. You have successfully changed the file type.

Changing the File Type by Saving It In Another File Format

Another way of changing the file type is by saving the file in another file format. This method will only work if the file types are related or belong to the same category. For instance, MS Word allows users to save or export files to different formats by simply using the ‘Save As’ feature.

Steps for Changing the File Type

To change the file type by saving it in another file format, you first need to open the file you want to save. Then, click ‘File’ located in the top right corner. Scroll down and select ‘Save As.’ Choose your PC as the storage location and select the folder where you want it to be stored.

In the ‘Save As’ window, you have the option to change both the file name and type. Click ‘Save as type’ and select the format from the list of options. Finally, click ‘Save’ to save the file in another format.
