Delete Duplicate WhatsApp Media

A billion people worldwide use WhatsApp as their primary means of instant messaging online. Users can chat with each other, or inside the WhatsApp groups. They can share their live location, maps, contacts, images, videos and PDF documents. The free-to-use communication app also allows voice and video calling for free. It supports nearly all smartphone models, and runs smoothly on 4G and 3G internet connections.

WhatsApp consumes a larger portion of your smartphone and SD memory card, and adversely affects your phone’s performance. A lot of duplicate content, including images and videos, can be regularly cleaned up to free-up storage space.

This guideline will help you get rid of duplicate WhatsApp junk.

Step # 1: Backup Your Stuff (Optional)

We strongly recommend that you should consider backing-up your WhatsApp conversations and media (such as videos and images) to avoid accidental personal data loss. The process is fairly simple and won’t take long.

  1. Open the WhatsApp app on your Android smartphone.
  2. Open the chat conversation that you want to backup.
  3. Tap on the horizontal three dots, i.e. Menu icon, on the upper right corner.
  4. Tap More, followed by Email Chat.
  5. You will be prompted whether you want to attach the associated media such as images and videos. Select the Attach Media option.
  6. When you’re prompted to choose your email client, tap the Gmail icon.
  7. Wait for a moment to upload your media on to the Google server.
  8. Enter your own email address as the Recipient Email.
  9. Tap on Send. An email will be sent to your own email account.
  10. You can download the attachments to your PC.

Step # 2: Connect Android Smartphone To PC

Now it is safe to connect your Android smartphone to your computer. A USB data cable is required to establish this connection.

  1. Connect a USB Data Cable to your Android smartphone’s charging port, and the other side to your computer’s USB Port.
  2. Wait for some time for your computer to recognize the new device.
  3. In your Android, set the Connection Mode to Media Device (MTP).
  4. Double-click This PC icon on your Desktop.
  5. Double-click your smartphone device icon. Note down the drive letter. For example: X:\
  6. Make sure that the drive is not empty. If no contents are displayed, you might want to disconnect and reconnect the USB Cable.

Step 3: Search For Duplicate WhatsApp Media

Thanks to the advancement in Technology. You don’t have to sit in front of your computer screen evaluating and comparing the contents of each file. With a simple duplicate search, you can get a comprehensive list of all duplicate files along with basic details such as name, path, size and type.

1. Download Clone Files Checker, a popular duplicate search utility

2. Install and run the program.

3. Make sure that the Scan Mode is set to File Search.

4. Click on the Add button under Include to Scan.

5. Add the following directories one by one:

(x:\ denotes the drive letter of your smartphone storage. Replace it with the appropriate drive letter.)

For WhatsApp:

  • x:\Internal Storage\WhatsApp\Media\WhatsApp Images
