“Duplicate Name Exists” Error Message

The following error is displayed while connecting to a network computer, or when you start the PC after installing Belkin Wireless Router.

“A duplicate name exists on the network”

Change the Computer Name

The name of the computer specified under System Properties dialog matches with other computers on the same network. In other words, two different network computers have the same name. Change the computer name as follows:

For Windows 8.1/ 8 and Earlier Versions:

  • Right click My Computer desktop icon, select Properties.
  • Click “Advanced system settings” link on the left panel.
  • Click the Computer Name tab.
  • Click the Change button.
  • Check the name specified in “Computer Name” textbox. It must be matching with one of the computer names in the same network.
  • Change the name, click OK | Apply | OK.

Change IP Settings

Change the Dynamic IP Address settings through Control Panel.

For Windows 8.1/ 8:

  • Press Windows Key + X.
  • Click Control Panel.
  • Click Network and Internet | Network and Sharing Center.
  • Click the network adapter displayed under “Connections”. (Right side of the screen below “Access type”)
  • In the General tab and Activity frame, click the “Properties” button.
  • Click Network tab in the new dialog.
  • Select the active version of your IP, say, Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4).
  • Click Properties button.
  • Contact your Internet Service Provider, ask them your IP Address and verify the same with that specified in the dialog box. Change it, if required to do so.
  • Click OK | OK | Close.

For Earlier Versions of Windows:

  • Click the Start button.
  • Select Control Panel.
  • Type “adapter” in the Search box located on the top right corner.
  • Click “View network connections” link under “Network and Sharing Center” header.
  • Right click your active connection, click Properties button.
  • Refer Steps # 6-10 from Windows 8.1/ 8 user’s paragraph.

Create a New User Account

The current user account files may be corrupt. Make a new account and try again.

For Windows 8.1/ 8:

  • Press Windows Key + X.
  • Click Control Panel.
  • Click User accounts and family safety | User accounts.
  • Click “Manage another account”.
  • Click “Add a new user in PC settings” link.
  • PC Settings will appear in a metro app.
  • Under “Other users” category, click “Add a user”.
  • Specify another Windows Live email id, click Next button.

For Earlier Versions of Windows:

  • Click the Start button, select Control Panel.
  • Click “Add or remove user accounts” under “User accounts and family safety” header.
  • Manage Accounts page will open.
  • Click “Create a new account” link.
  • Specify a name for your new account, select “Administrator” type and then click “Create account” button.

Release Current IP Address

Release the current IP Address with the command given below:

For Windows 8.1/ 8:

  • Press Windows Key + X.
  • Click “Command Prompt (Admin)”.
  • Type below command and press ENTER:ipconfig /release
  • Exit Command Prompt.

For Earlier Versions of Windows:

  • Click the Start button.
  • Type “Command Prompt (Admin)” in the search box.
  • Right click it in search results.
  • Select “Run as administrator”.
  • Refer Steps # 3-4 from Windows 8.1/ 8 user’s paragraph.

Delete Duplicate Files

“Duplicate files cause Duplicate Name Exists” error message. Remove all duplicate files with a Duplicate File Cleaner.

For Windows 8.1/ 8 and Earlier Versions:

  • Download Clone Files Checker.
  • Install and run the program.
  • Search for duplicate files. Delete all tons of GBs of duplicate files found.
