Lightroom 5 is Running Way Too Slow

Adobe Lightroom 5, a photo organizer and advanced photo editing tool from Adobe Systems Inc., freezes while processing digital photographs and high resolution images, as reported by the

Lightroom community on random Internet forums. This article outlines simple troubleshooting instructions for layman users and professional digital photographers.

Reduce Standard Previews

Lightroom 5‘s Standard Preview feature processes data with the help of raw engine camera. If the size of the standard preview doesn’t fit the actual computer display, it might lead to performance glitches. There are two options namely minimal and embedded previews. You can configure Lightroom 5‘s catalog settings as outlined below:

  1. Click the Edit menu.
  2. Select Catalog Settings.
  3. Select Minimal Preview option to select the smaller standard preview.

Set Optimum Screen Resolution

Make sure that your computer’s screen resolution best matches with the longest edge of standard preview size, via the Catalog Settings as discussed earlier. As an example, for a standard preview sizing 2050 pixels, the best matching screen resolution would be 1920*1200 pixels.

  1. Type Screen Resolution in the Search Box on the Taskbar.
  2. Click Change the Screen Resolution from the Search Results.
  3. The Advanced Display Settings page in the Settings window will open up.
  4. Use the drop down box to set an optimum screen resolution, and then click Apply.
  5. Close the Settings page.

Increase Camera Raw Cache Size

Thanks to the developers, there are tons of customization settings to dramatically improve application performance in Lightroom 5. The default camera raw cache, a folder that holds temporary contents required during application runtime, is 1GB. However, this cache size is insufficient for most professional photographers at times. You can increase it further depending on your requirements.

  1. Open up the Preferences dialog. To do so, click Lightroom | Preferences.
  2. Click the File Handling tab.
  3. Specify 10.0 GB (as an example) in the maximum size text box under Camera Raw Cache Settings.

Set Different Drive as Cache Location

If you’ve got a single hard disk, select a different drive with large free space to store the cache contents. If your default cache location is primary hard disk, change it to secondary hard disk, and vice versa. If your default cache location is a removable storage drive, e.g. a USB stick or a Memory Card, which is quite slower compared to an internal hard disk, use your HDD to store the cache contents.

  1. Refer to steps # 1-2 under Increase Camera Raw Cache Size.
  2. Click Choose and navigate to the location where you want to store the cache.
  3. Select a new folder located on a different drive you intend to use for caching.

Optimize Catalog

Tons of images in the program catalog gradually slow down application performance.

  1. Click the File menu.
  2. Choose Optimize Catalog.

Update Application Components

Ensure at all times you are using the latest version. This helps in making use of the newest advancements as well as  fixes any bugs from the previous edition.

  1. Click Help.
  2. Select Check for Updates.
