Duplicate files occur due to different reasons. Syncing files between PCs is a major contributor to duplication. Other factors include manual errors while copying or transferring photos from a digital camera. Unwanted versions of your original photos will not only occupy a significant storage, but also make your computer run slower. Lightroom might respond slower than usual and you’ll find yourself dealing with the same file versions differently, thus wasting a lot of your time.
Manually identifying duplicate photos is not as easy as it may appear. The data stored on your hard drive is fragmented into tens of thousands of folders, sub-folders. Even if you put in a lot of effort, there are chances that you might miss out a considerable amount of duplicates and even delete some original photos believing them to be duplicates. Another possibility is that different photos on your hard drive may share the same file names with minor variations (for example, A.jpeg, A(2).jpeg, A(3).jpeg) but they might be completely unique files.
