iTunes Keeps Freezing – How to Overcome this Problem

If iTunes stops responding, takes unexpected time to open and shutdown. Follow these tips to overcome this problem in Windows PCs and laptops. 

Fix Registry Errors and Optimize PC

iTunes gets slow on those systems which are not regularly optimized for faster performance. Cleaning Windows Registry and speeding up system can help overcome it.

Disable Downloading Album Artwork

iTunes downloads album artworks for every music file. Sometimes it uses the cached artworks. Disable this feature as shown under:

1. Open iTunes.

2. Press Alt key to display menu bar.

3. Click Edit menu, select Preferences.

4. Click Store tab.

5. Uncheck the checkbox named “Automatically download album artwork”.

6. Click OK button.

 

Terminate Unused Services

Not everyone uses all Apple products like iPhone, iPod, Apple TV and so on. As default, Apple enables services related to all these products without user’s confirmation. Change program preferences to terminate unused services and prevent higher CPU usage. This will eventually improve iTunes performance.

1. Open iTunes. Click Edit menu, select Preferences.

2. In the dialog that opens, click Devices tab.

3. Uncheck following checkboxes

  • Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes
  • Look for iPod touch, iPhone and iPad Remotes

4. Click Apple TV.

5. Uncheck the checkbox named “Look for Apple TVs”.

6. Click Sharing tab.

7. Uncheck the box named “Look for shared libraries”.

8. Click OK.

 

Delete Smart Playlists

Many people can’t live without Smart Playlists. If you’re not using them, better you delete them. This will significantly improve iTunes performance.

1. On left side of the screen, there is a panel with Playlists category.

2. Expand the Playlists category.

3. Delete Smart Playlists. Right click a playlist, select Delete option.

4. This shows up a new confirmation box. Click Delete button.

 

Turn Off Genius

The Genius feature, when turned on, is doing a lot of things in background. If you’re not using it, this unnecessarily consumes system resources.

1. Click Store menu.

2. Select Turn Off Genius.

3. A confirmation prompt will appear saying, “Are you sure you want to turn off Genius?

4. Click Turn Off Genius button.

 

Delete All Duplicate Media

When you’ve huge music collection downloaded from the Internet, there is possibility of duplication of original files. You may have thousands of duplicate music files. Delete all identical copies to free-up disk space.

1. Click View menu.

2. Select Show duplicate items.

3. Now delete all duplicate media files from your hard drive.

You may alternatively use Clone Files Checker to search for duplicate music files. Remember, iTunes only displays duplicate files that are added in albums.

 

Get Rid of Unnecessary Columns

The default column needs to be changed. Keep only useful columns to make it simple, easy to navigate through the user interface.

1. Right click Column Bar.

2. This opens up a context menu list.

3. Uncheck all those columns you don’t require.
