Use Disk CleanUp:

This is a built-in tool in Windows. This will analyse and clean up temporary files, cache contents.

 

For Windows 8.1/ 8 and Earlier Versions:

1. Double click Computer desktop icon.

2. Right click a drive.

3. Select Properties.

4. Click the General tab.

5. Click Disk CleanUp button.

6. Analyze and delete temporary files.

 

Remove Space-Easting Windows Features and Applications

Windows comes with bulk of features. These features may eat large portion of your disk space. If you’re not using any of them, simply disable them. Windows will uninstall rarely used features.

 

For Windows 8.1/ 8:

1. Press Windows Key + X.

2. Click “Programs and Features”.

3. Click “Turn Windows features on or off” link on the left side panel.

4. Windows Features dialog will open.

5. Uncheck all the features you rarely use.

6. Click the OK button.

7. Reboot your system when you’re done.

 

For Earlier Versions of Windows:

1. Click the Start button.

2. Type “Turn Windows features on or off” in the Search Box.

3. Press ENTER.

Allocate Lower Space for System Restore

System Restore eats up a lot of your hard disk space. Windows automatically creates new restore points before installing new programs, before downloading new updates, and so on. This eats up a large portion of your disk space.

Free up disk space in two ways, viz. Firstly, allocate lower disk space to be used for System Restore. Secondly, clean-up existing restore points, if any.

 

For Windows 8.1/ 8 and Earlier Versions:

1. Right-click Computer desktop icon.

2. Select Properties from the context menu.

3. Click the “Advanced systems settings” link.

4. System Properties dialog will open.

5. Click the System Protection tab.

6. Click the Configure button.

7. Under “Disk Space Used” frame move the slider to extreme left, say 1-2%.

8. Click the Delete button to remove all earlier restore points.

9. Click OK | OK.

 

Search Duplicate Files

Search for duplicate files in your hard disk. This will free up tens of GBs of space. Duplicate files are found in various file formats- like music, documents, videos, images, and so on.

 

For Windows 8.1/ 8 and Earlier Versions:

3. Search for duplicate files, remove them immediately.
