While you can save a lot of duplicate files on this data-bank, it also faces the problem of duplicate files. During the bulk-data movement operations, same files find a home in the recipient hard-disk. Here comes the need to dedupe the files.

So how do you eliminate the duplicates and free-up the storage of your portable SSD?

Clone Files Checker is a unique clone files identification utility for both Windows and Mac operating systems. It uses widely popular MD5 hash algorithm to find your identical documents, images, videos, music and archives in a pattern. As soon as the scan is finished, you can view more information about each file, load the Properties dialogue to get further details, and even open the file in corresponding default program (for example, Paint for image files, Excel for spreadsheets).

The program provides detailed history of all scans conducted over a period of time. Using the History tab, you can get details about each scan performed including files list, storage space occupied, total space cleaned up, action taken, and so on. The Restore button allows you to restore deleted files with a single click. CFC has a built-in feature to compress and backup files to reduce the storage space.

The Windows edition of Clone File Checker includes supports for your cloud support accounts. This means that, you can scan your DropBox, Google Drive, Box, Microsoft OneDrive accounts without needing to actually download a single file to your hard disk. Additionally, there is nothing to worry about the privacy factor as the developers of Clone File Checker really have no access to any of your files.

The steps are outlined below for both Windows and Mac users:

  1. Download Clone Files Checker from the official website of Sorcim Technologies. Once the product has been downloaded, install and run it.
  2. Click on the Add button on the left corner of your screen. Select a directory you want to scan for duplicate files. You can add multiple directories if your duplicate files scattered across numerous drives, folders and sub-folders.
  3. Similarly, you can build a list of the folders that you do not want to include in the scan. Simply click on the Exclude From Scan tab and add those folders one by one.
  4. Now you are ready to configure the scan filters which allow you to customize the scan as per your needs.
  5. Select the All Files option to search all file types and perform a thorough scan.
  6. If you like to scan only certain final file formats, use the Custom option and then untick any file types that you do not want to include in the scan.
  7. Finally click on Start Search and a progress bar will appear indicating overall scan progress.
  8. After finishing up, you will be prompted to select one of the following options:
    • Quick Fix: Select this option if you do not wish to review the results yourself, and take a uniform action for all items. For example: You are running out of time and do not want to individually specify action for each of the files, this should be your best choice. With just a few clicks you can specify criteria for bulk file selection, and choose an action of your choice. It is strongly recommended that you use the in-house backup functionality to compress and preserves the files in the case you change your mind in the future. This can be a good help to avoid accidental deletion of your important data.
    • Review & Fix: The second option Review & Fix gives a comprehensive list of all files. It shows the names of duplicate files along with their parent directories, file size, creation date, and other information. All the files are grouped based on a common MD5 Hash, which is an algorithm used to find duplication of data. It is up to you whether to individually select some files, and leave other files unharmed. You can also export the scan results to a comma separated files list. The software automatically show the preview of each file when you selected it. There is no more need to open each file just to view its contents. There are also predefined patterns which you can use to auto select files. Each of these patterns are listed below:
      • Retain newest files in each group: Use this option to keep all newer versions of your documents and files and move/ delete the older ones.
      • Retain oldest files in each group: This should be your choice if you want to retain the original copies of duplicate files and get rid of unwanted modifications.
      • Retain the most modified in each group: When selected, this option automatically bulk selects all most modified versions of your documents and files.
      • Retain the least modified in each group: Use this option if you do want to retain the least modified files in each pair.
      • Select by file locations: Use this option if you wish to mark or unmark files located in a specific directory. This can be helpful if you want to preserve files stored in specific locations of your Samsung T5 Portable SSD.
  1. Finally, click on the Select Action button and choose whether to permanently delete marked files or move them to a new folder of your choice.
